9 Oct - 11 Nov 2012: Exhibition Research by Walking, Sala Rekalde, Bilbao

“An urban neighbourhood is not only determined by geographical and economic factors but by how its inhabitants and those of other neighbourhoods picture it” P. H. Chombart de Lauwe, 1952

Research by walking is a curatorial project developed within the framework of Alba Colomo’s residency at the Het Wilde Weten (HWW) centre in Rotterdam, as a result of a scholarship awarded by Sala Rekalde. The exhibition shows the material used by the curator during her research process, along with the work of artists Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum, Kim Bouvy and Left Hand Rotation. The work by the Left Hand Rotation collective was developed as part of the KunstWeekend Charlois festival in Rotterdam in June 2012.

Research by walking focuses on the role of artists in the social transformation of the south of Rotterdam –an area where a large number of ‘creative professionals’ live- and how their presence relates to urban (and urbanistic) development policies drawn up by local institutions. The high concentration of artists – and the much vaunted ‘creative class’- who live and work in this part of the city, appears to have been one of the strategies implemented by the local authorities to regenerate the socio-economic fabric of the area.

The curator, Alba Colomo (Bilbao, 1985) graduated in Humanities from the Carlos III University in Madrid and took a Masters in Curating Latin American Art at the University of Essex (United Kingdom). She has worked in spaces including Gasworks (London) and at the Pinta (London) and Justmadrid fairs. Her research line concentrates on studying the possibilities contemporary art holds for destabilising and creating fissures in the suppositions inherent to our day to day. One of her most recent projects is Art Control Society-Arte Control Sociedad, a publication that shows work by three artists around the issue of social control. In November 2012 Alba will be presenting the project estado ausente (absent state), which will be shown at the art centre Lugar a Dudas, in Cali, Colombia. http://albacolomo.tumblr.com/

The artists
Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum have been working together since 2001. Using documentation as a working methodology, their work centres on the analysis and questioning of notions such as space, work, ownership and community, always within the framework of everyday socio-political reality. Some of their projects include Amikejo, in the MUSAC (2011); Stay inside. Close windows and doors (2008); Let me hold your hand, Centre for Visual Introspection, Bucharest (2008); and Meanwhile, in the living room…, Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz (2007). http://www.parallelports.org/

Kim Bouvy works as an artist and curator in the field of photography. Her projects include the show Reclaiming the Streets, in MAMA, which she ran, and the exhibition Spectacular City at the Institute of Architecture of the Netherlands (NAI), for which she was the assistant curator. As an artist, her work revolves around the contemporary ‘Urban Condition’, combining images and text. Her book Phantom City (2010) tells a story about the presence and the future possibilities of the city of Rotterdam.
